Safeguarding: online safety education

Statutory guidance and high-quality resources for online safety education.

Part 1 — Statutory guidance for all schools

Under Keeping Children Safe in Education, schools must ensure “appropriate filtering and monitoring systems [are] in place and… regularly review their effectiveness.” Online safety is a shared responsibility across governing bodies, staff and designated safeguarding leads (DSLs).

  • Governing bodies must implement filtering and monitoring systems
  • All staff require training on their online safety roles and responsibilities
  • DSLs should lead on online safety strategy and system oversight

Part 2 — Make the most of high-quality resources

  • LGfL Safeguarding — teaching resources, policy templates and guidance, regularly updated.
  • LGfL Safe Skills — an interactive diagnostic aligned with the UKCIS Education for a Connected World framework; monitor progress across 8 strands at school, class and pupil level.
  • Common Sense Education — free resources for Years 1–13, covering privacy, cyberbullying and media literacy.
  • Google’s Be Internet Legends (KS2) — games teaching “internet sharp”, “internet alert” and “internet kind”.
  • Education for a Connected World — structured guidance for curriculum planning.
  • UK Safer Internet Centre — educational packs, videos and guidance on emerging risks.
